Package 1 of the Short Term Low Volume (STLV) seawater desalination project for Gaza: a 10,000 m³/day seawater reverse-osmosis plant with its civil, mechanical and electrical works, built on the coast in the Al Sudaniya area north of Gaza City for CMWU with funding from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. MACC designed and built the plant, including site clearance, logistics and all civil works. The plant can be dispatched at 25, 50, 75 or 100% of capacity.

Scope of work

  • Detailed process and engineering design of the plant
  • Intake: five beach wells with submersible pumps and three vertical-turbine transfer booster pumps
  • Pre-treatment building with multimedia filters, backwash pumps and cartridge filters
  • SWRO process plant: four trains with high-pressure pumps, booster pumps and energy-recovery sets
  • Post-treatment: pH adjustment, remineralisation and disinfection; CIP and flushing systems
  • Tanks: 2,500 m³ treated water, 750 m³ intermediate, 200 m³ brine, and two 6 m³ surge vessels
  • Brine outfall: DN710 HDPE line of about 195 m, about 100 m of it offshore
  • Product-water pumping (three 250 m³/h pumps), MV supply and two standby generators
  • 1,200 m² steel process building and administration building
  • Siemens WinCC PLC/SCADA, testing, commissioning and trial operation

Technology and key components

  • Single-pass SWRO at 45% recovery, designed for 40,500 ppm feed TDS (41,800 ppm worst case); pH raised for boron removal
  • Four SWRO skids with Protec pressure vessels and Hydranautics membranes, about 111 m³/h each
  • Four Sulzer high-pressure pumps, 112 m³/h at 74 bar, with super-duplex stainless-steel PN100 piping to the skids
  • ERI PX-260 isobaric energy recovery, four sets of three PX units, with four 136 m³/h booster pumps
  • Five 50 m³ multimedia filters (200 m³/h each) with three 320 m³/h backwash pumps
  • Siemens WinCC SCADA with 7,500 PLC–SCADA tags and 3,000 logging tags
