Scope
Design–build of the WWTP and Wadi Gaza Central Pumping Station, plus two years of operation assistance

Contract 1 of the KfW-funded Gaza Central Wastewater Project built the new Central Gaza Wastewater Treatment Plant at Buriej and the Wadi Gaza Central Pumping Station for CMWU, under supervision by Dorsch International Consultants. MACC delivered the design support and mobilisation, all concrete structures and buildings, roads, ductile-iron and HDPE piping, the GEDCO power connection and the operation assistance. The plant was taken over in August 2020.

Scope of work

  • Design support, site mobilisation and arrangements
  • All concrete structures and buildings with finishes: treatment tanks, digesters, operations building, workshop, pump house and administration buildings
  • Two-storey operations building with laboratory and control room (530 m² per floor) and a 400 m² workshop
  • Ductile-iron mains DN250–DN1600 and HDPE pipes DN50–DN1600, plus HDPE biogas lines
  • Excavation of 186,377 m³ and soil replacement of 135,000 m³
  • About 21,000 m² of asphalt roads and interlock paving
  • 22 kV power connection from the GEDCO grid, transformer station and standby generator room
  • Two years of operation assistance after taking over

Technology and key components

  • Preliminary treatment: screening, flow measurement, aerated grit and grease removal
  • Biological treatment: primary clarifiers, four aeration tanks with diffused air and blower building, four final settlement tanks, return and waste sludge pumping
  • Sludge and energy: gravity thickeners, anaerobic digesters with 1,500 m³ gas holder and flare, desulphurisation, biogas CHP generators, belt-press dewatering
  • Wadi Gaza CPS: three dry-installed centrifugal pumps (two duty, one standby), 2,790 m³/h at 32.8 m head, 440 kW each, with mechanically raked bar screens and septage acceptance
  • DN1200 pressure main from the CPS to the WWTP inlet works, with flow measurement and storm overflow
  • Transformer and generator building sized for 2–3 MW consumption and 5 MW peak; SCADA monitoring
