Key facts
- Area
- Two lined cells (1A and 1B), 100,000 m²
- Works
- 1,400,000 m³ excavation, HDPE lining, leachate and rain-water lagoons, rehabilitation of about 1,000,000 m³ of old waste
- Quantity
- Capacity for up to 2,200,000 m³ of municipal solid waste
MACC built the Sofa engineered sanitary landfill at Al Fukhari for the Municipal Development and Lending Fund, as part of the Gaza Solid Waste Management Project funded by the World Bank, AFD and the European Union. The works comprised two lined cells with capacity for up to 2.2 million m³ of municipal solid waste, leachate and rain-water systems, rehabilitation of the old dump site and site infrastructure. The landfill was taken over in August 2019.
Scope of work
- Excavation of about 1,400,000 m³ for cells 1A and 1B, to 16–20 m below ring-road level
- Lining of the 100,000 m² cell area with 2.5 mm double-textured HDPE geomembrane
- 68,000 m² of 1,200 g/m² protective geotextile
- Leachate collection layer of 58,000 m² drain-tube geocomposite at the base of both cells
- Leachate drainage from the cells to a leachate storage and pre-treatment lagoon, with a submersible pump
- Rain-water storage lagoon of 13,000 m³
- Rehabilitation of about 1,000,000 m³ of old waste at the existing dump site
- Weighbridge, asphalt roads, administration building and maintenance building
Technology and key components
- Base liner of 2.5 mm double-textured HDPE geomembrane over the full 100,000 m² cell floor and slopes
- AFITEX Draintube geocomposite as the leachate collection and drainage layer
- Submersible pumping of leachate to a lined storage and pre-treatment lagoon
- Deep excavation to 20 m below natural ground carried out under ESHS measures that MDLF certified as meeting international standards
